Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Barrett 18451846 Volume 1 Elizabeth Barrett Browning Books
This is a delight to read. It is a rare treat to read the intimate correspondence between two such gifted writers. Many writers now seem so self-obsessed with their talents that it becomes obnoxious, but these letters offer the reader a glimpse of genius in private. Their writing, reflecting their thinking, is brilliant. In the earlier letters in particular, Barrett seems almost the brighter and sharper thinker, but one gets the impression that Browning was being rather chivalrous and perhaps a bit demeaning in his manner with her. But as their relationship grows, and we begin reading letters they wrote to each other between secret personal visits, we can really sense the relaxing tone. But their habit of discussing their hearts' desires in the most beautiful expressions and images continues. One gets the impression from reading these letters that the two of them must have found the rest of society quite tedious and inexpressive. The book is not really organised. One letter simply flows on to the next chronologically, but that is fine and makes it easier to dip into reading whenever you can.

Letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Barrett 18451846 Volume 1 Elizabeth Barrett Browning Books Reviews
Excellent!
The letters of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett is a book compiling all of the couple's letters to each other from 1845 to 1846. It is very sweet and romantic, and Im glad that put this out there. I would also suggest Elizabeth's «Sonnets of the Portuguese» for further reading.
Great for Browning fans - and free.
I greatly enjoyed rereading these letters in the format. The translation of many of the Greek quotations was helpful. My only disappointment is that the second volume is not available for . Sigh.
This is only the first volume of a two volume set. And the letters are not accurately transcribed. Many bits we now see as important were edited out. I believe this is Vol I of the original / first publication of the letters. That said it is a good starter read for novices.
Glad to have this in my digital library.
If this were a novel, l might complain that the story is too romantic. Robert Browning was a minor poet, and Elizabeth Barrett a major celebrity and a helpless invalid, when the two began corresponding. "I love your poems, Miss Barrett," he wrote to her, "and l love YOU." She thought he was a little nuts, but still consented to a little face time, concealing his visits from her rigid, authoritarian father. And Robert loved her back to life, and back to health, and ultimately, into a runaway marriage. Only one complaint the people NEED Volume ll.
